Jose W. Fernandez, US Assistant
Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, recently visited Oranbo
Elementary School to lend support to an innovative program that brings
technology to public school students to enable them to broaden their horizon
and discover the opportunities that the world has to offer.
Fernandez,
who was in the country as part of his Asian tour, graced a workshop that taught
Grade 6 students about the power of social media, as well as the risks
associated with digital engagement. The
workshop is part of e.Studyante, an award-winning Procter & Gamble program
for education that aims to empower underprivileged public students to seek
information to supplement their lessons, as well as explore topics that
diversify their interests.
e.Studyante
equips students and teachers with tools to improve school performance by
complementing traditional methods with additional content and an upgrade in
technology. It includes the donation of Samsung laptops that contain e-books
from Vibal Publishing to augment the school curriculum. Internet connectivity
gives the students and teachers access to vast information to boost discovery
and learning. e.Studyante is being implemented in several schools in the
country. Robinsons also helped renovate and upgrade the school’s Learning
Resource Center with audio-visual equipment to further enhance the school’s
current library of educational material.
Fernandez’s
visit enlivened the program’s aim to connect Filipino students with the rest of
the world. He witnessed how the program
encourages a global outlook among the participants and instills hope for a
better future. He was impressed by the
remarkable progress made by the teachers in creating better learning
opportunities for the children with the help of technological tools.
During
the visit, Fernandez said, "eStudyante is also a heartwarming example of
'America in the Community,' where a great American company joins forces with
Filipino institutions to make a difference for young people. With its 70-year
history in the Philippines, P&G's role goes beyond that of just an
employer. Its commitment, and connection to local communities is real." Fernandez was
joined by officials of program partners, Procter & Gamble Philippines,
Robinsons, Vibal and Samsung.
