We all have a digital life. An average person has 10 digital accounts he maintains—both active and passive. However, given the threat landscape, cybercriminal activities, hackers, and malware become part of our digital lives as well.
Trend Micro, the leader in cloud protection, recently released a study showing that while 7 out of 10 users feel that it is their personal responsibility to protect their and their family’s online security, online, only 4 out of 10 feel they know how to do so. Given the amount of information both personal and professional that we share online, what should we be scared of?
Scared by the Numbers?
According to Trend Micro, on the average, 60% share very useful, personal details like birthday and family members, 43% do not change their privacy settings or do so only when prompted, only 32% visit their child’s social media profile and there are 6% who actually be-“friends” everyone, even those they do not personally know.
Myla Pilao, marketing director for Trend Labs, said, “14% of social networking sites and 1 out of 4 email accounts get hacked, at one point or another.”
This doesn’t mean though that we have to develop a sense of scophobia. According to Pilao, “We just have to be vigilant and informed.”
