With a long drive from the school to their house, Mark Magboo, incoming third year college student at Lyceum of Philippines University - Batangas, tries to balance his studies and responsibilities at home by studying inside his father's jeepney on their way home. One of the things that gives Mark hope is a sign plastered at the entrance door of one of their community hospitals in Batangas: "Looking for Medical Technologist. Apply inside." He touches it every time he sees it with the hope that someday he can actually apply for the position.

Mark is part of this year's new batch of scholars of Handog ng Safeguard MedTech ng Kinabukasan Scholarship Program.  His exposure to successful medtechs in the community, as well as his fascination to health sciences developed his passion for medical technology.

Medical Technology is designed to prepare a student for work in a hospital or industrial laboratory after graduation. The medtech performs life-saving laboratory tests on urine, blood saliva and scraped cells.
In August 2013, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)identified the course as one of the in-demand and hard-to-fill jobs.  This is based on manpower demands for 2011-2015 and the labor market study of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Now on its 24th year, Safeguard and the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) welcome today its new batch of medical technology scholars at The Conservatory, Manila Peninsula Hotel. Top 15 scholars from all over the country are recognized for their academic accomplishments, socio-civic participation, outstanding leadership skills, as well as having the sincere vision to raise awareness on the importance of the medical technology profession in the country.

To date, the scholarship program has awarded over 305 scholarships. “We aim to support the country’s most promising, underprivileged medical technology students and develop them into tomorrow’s healthcare leaders,” says P&G Country Communications Leader Clint Navales.

“The scholarship is also a great avenue to encourage students to take up medical technology course as medical technologists from the Philippines are in high demand because of the industry’s emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of diseases,” shares Romeo Ignacio, PAMET President.

Ignacio adds that as hospitals and laboratories in the United States find it cheaper to send some of their core and non-core medical processes overseas, the Philippines’ medical sector is growing by the day. Filipinos have a huge pool of highly skilled medical technology professionals with the ability to work with people of different ethnicities. In addition, the similarity in health system makes medical technologists trained in the Philippines comfortable in U.S. laboratories.

Realizing the high demand for medtechs in the labor market, Safeguard continues to support PAMET through the scholarship program, in their vision to help raise awareness of the medical technology profession and further strengthen the industry with trainings and education programs in line with their mission to promote proper hygiene and health education among Filipino families.

The latest batch of scholars are Kendra Mariz L. Alo, Riverside College, Jiovanni T. Diaz, University of Baguio, Mark Joseph I. Palec, Far Eastern University, Mark Anthony M. Magboo, Lyceum of the Philippines University – Batangas, Bromarie M. Olarte, University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos, Allysa Camille M. These new scholars are considered crème de la crème among college students from all over the country. They underwent a rigorous screening process, which culminated in a panel interview. Full tuition is provided to all scholars.

With Mark’s new scholarship, he is one step closer to achieving his dream of helping people in their community hospital as a medical technologist.

The 25th batch of scholarship process will start in June 2014.
