"A Future Worth Choosing"
Addis Ababa l 31 January -- United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon announced his Sustainable Energy for All Initiative and a strengthened Sustainable Development Strategy for the UN system at the launch today of the Global Sustainability Panel Report, “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing.”
“Both science and economics tell us our current path is unsustainable,” said Mr. Ban. “Ecosystems are under stress. Economies are faltering. The human appetite for resources keeps growing. We need to chart a new, more sustainable course for the future, one that strengthens equality and economic growth while protecting our planet. Sustainable development offers our best chance to change course.”
The Global Sustainability Panel Report lays out clear recommendations on how governments and the private sector should move forward in a balance of environmental, social and environmental imperatives. While it does not reveal any startling new facts--it actually does not provide any new research--it is significant because it takes a practical look at the problems and solutions. The panel consisted of 22 members including heads of states, former heads of state, ministers and government officials. The report, which was developed by the panel over six meetings over the last 16 months, is the culmination of that effort. (PRESS RELEASE)
