AMERICAN EYE CENTER
A new treatment for
cataracts has just been unveiled by American Eye Center (AEC), which promises
to provide patients with the most advanced all-laser cataract procedure---the
first of its kind in Asia.
Dubbed the Alcon LenSx
femtosecond laser surgery, this new equipment brings an unprecedented level of
safety, speed and precision in treating cataracts, and enhances the host of
options for surgical-based methods that AEC offers its clients.
From a surgical perspective,
advances in cataract treatment have improved the way ophthalmologists deal with
this condition in the past two decades. We have seen how the merger of
technology and surgical ingenuity contributed to making cataract surgery the
modern-day miracle that it is today. Currently, we can remove the cataract
through a very small (2-3mm) incision in the eyeball using fine surgical blades
and implant a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) that restores full functional
vision in patients after surgery. This is called “Phacoemulsification”,
presently the standard in cataract practice worldwide. Unfortunately, this
procedure has often been mistakenly referred to as “laser eye surgery”—which it
is NOT. It is more appropriate to call this procedure “small-incision cataract
surgery”, “sutureless cataract surgery”, or “no-stitch cataract surgery” for
the layman. True laser-assisted cataract surgery has never been available to
patients until today—with the introduction of the Alcon LenSx femtosecond laser
surgery.
Dr. Cesar Ramon G. Espiritu,
who specializes in Cornea, External Disease treatment at AEC, said that this
new technology shows the company’s commitment to provide the best eye care to
its patients.
“The Alcon LenSx femtosecond
laser surgery is currently the most advanced method for cataract treatment, and
we’re proud to be the first in Asia to offer it,” he says. “We want thousands
of Filipinos suffering from cataracts to see that treatment is now even faster,
much safer, more precise and definitely pain-free.”
Cataract is the leading
cause of blindness in the Philippines, with an estimated half a million
Filipinos blind or having some degree of visual impairment. This disease, which
hits almost everyone due to aging, involves the gradual formation of a cloudy
film in the lens of the eye, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity,
and obstructing the passage of light.
Espiritu emphasizes that
patients must decide their preferred method of surgery together with an expert
ophthalmologist. AEC is backed by a team of Associated Eye Specialists, the
most experienced and longest-running EyeMD group practice in the country, which
comprises 17 doctors with various subspecialties. AEC also boasts a staff of
highly qualified optometrists, nurses and counselors to provide patients with
personalized quality eye care.
The American Eye Center has
been breaking new ground when it comes to ophthalmic care since its
establishment in 1995. Accredited with
the Department of Health and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, AEC
is fully equipped with branches located
at the Level 5, EDSA Shangri-La Plaza, and at the Level 4 of Greenbelt 5,
Makati City. For
inquiries, call 636-0762 or 729-EYES (3937) or visit www.americaneye.com.ph, follow eyetweets

URBAN ATHLETICS
I really like playing basketball not just because the thrill I got in playing this sport but more importantly the friendship I gained in doing this, not to mention the health benefits that I get in involving myself to this kind of activity. For many years that I have been playing this kind of physically exhausting kind of sport. I met a lot of people from different walks of life from the rich one to the very poor ones, the tall ones to the dwarf size one, to the kind one to the extremely unruly ones, you name it and I played with them already. Then all of that changed when a certain Barangay rules has been implemented and that is the “NO SHOE NO PLAY POLICY” that affected a lot of the players that I used to play with. Because of this rule I wasn’t able to play anymore particularly with the financially-challenge basketball peers of mine who cannot even afford to buy a pair of shoes for themselves and for this very reason I joined this Urban Athletics Radii contest for me to able to help even one of my basketball peers to have his own pair of basketball shoes and for us to be able to play on the court again and do the tricks we used to do.
I would like to thank Urban Athletics, Pinoy Urban Music and FlipClandot.com for this online contest.

MAESTRO RYAN CAYABYAB FULFILLS HIS DREAM OF HAVING (1,000) ONE THOUSAND VOICE CHOIR
Fulfilling one’s dream is what almost everyone of us aspires for in life. And this is what actually the Maestro, Mr. Ryan Cayabyab just fulfilled when he, together with the 1,000 voice choir and the Manila Symphony Orchestra did when they mesmerized the full-packed Smart Araneta Coliseum last night with world-class performances by Angeline Quinto, Rachel Herodias, Lea Salonga, Jed Madela, KC Concepcion, Piolo Pascual, Ariel Rivera and other ABS-CBN artist hosted by Ms. Universe 2011 Ms. Shamcey Supsup and 2010 Ms. Venus Raj.
It all started when Mr. Ryan Cayabyab is being interviewed on television and it so happened that Mam Judy Araneta Roxas is watching that program when Mr. Cayabyab mentioned that he wants to fulfill his dream of conducting a (1,000) one thousand voice chorale in Smart-Araneta Coliseum. In hearing this, Mam Judy Araneta Roxas heart was touched, so the very next day she called ABS-CBN and told them that she wants to fulfill the dream of Mr. Ryan Cayabyab of having a thousand choir performing in the said place. And the rest as they say is history.
DERMCLINIC @ 40 WITH MS. VENUS RAJ (WWW.DERMCLINIC.COM.PH)
DERMCLINIC CELEBRATES ITS 40TH YEAR WITH MS. VENUS RAJ AS ITS NEW ENDORSER. In photo: (l-r) Ms. Universe 2011 4th runner-up, Ms. Venus Raj and Dr. Vinzon Pineda; founder and President of Dermclinic
Have you ever heard of a businessman or perhaps a doctor who claims that God is his partner in his business? Maybe some of you don’t, but for those who are familiar with the story of Dermclinic and the man behind in the establishment of this mall-based skin clinic, it is no longer a mystery to them hearing this unusual statement. As vocal as he is in the practice of safe and sound surgical procedure, so as he is in his faith in God. And this is what Dr. Vinson Pineda, founder and president of Dermclinic claims to be. “As God was with Jacob so I will be with you in prospering you….This Biblical verse served as Dr. Pineda’s inspiration in establishing Dermclinic from a humble beginning of just one branch in Manila to (21) twenty one branches today located mostly in major malls nationwide.
“Do not go by popularity but go by professionalism” These are the very words that Dr. Vinzon Pineda uttered in suggesting as to where to go to make oneself beautiful or at least to be presentable to others. This statement is very true as many of our fellowmen go to certain skin clinic just because the clinic is widely known and being endorsed by a well known personality. Don’t get me wrong, being popular is not a bad idea, but if you patronize a product or go to a skin clinic solely based on popularity and not on the quality of the product or the services being given, we are committing a big mistake. And this is the reason why Dermclinic is embarking on its doctors and their staff the training that is needed in giving total customer satisfaction.
